Dear College of Human Sciences Alumni and Friends,
In early 2026, we celebrated a historic milestone with the groundbreaking of the Barbara Drummond Thorne Academic and Research Facility. Scheduled to open in fall 2027, this new building will serve as a vibrant hub for teaching, research, and collaboration, positioning the college to meet the needs of students and industries for decades to come.
Of course, progress sometimes requires a little patience. To make way for the new facility, we said goodbye to beloved Spidle Hall and temporarily relocated many of our faculty and students to Haley Center. Our community has embraced the change with remarkable flexibility and good spirit, all while keeping an eye on the live construction camera on the facilities webpage and watching our future take shape day by day.
As the new building rises, we are also creating meaningful opportunities for alumni and friends to be part of its legacy. Naming opportunities throughout the facility are available, and a brick paver project will allow supporters to commemorate their time at Auburn or honor someone special who helped shape their journey.
Even amid transition, the accomplishments of our college community have been extraordinary. Our 2025 International Quality of Life Awards made history with its first-ever celebration in Washington, D.C., welcoming our largest audience yet. We were honored to recognize former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates and former NASA astronaut and Auburn alumna Jan Davis as our 2025 honorees. Their stories—and the unforgettable evening—are highlighted in this magazine.
Meanwhile, our highly ranked and nationally recognized programs continue to grow in both reputation and impact through groundbreaking research, exploring fascinating and impactful questions. From major grants focused on healthy marriages and relationships to cutting-edge work weaving AI into design to improve health outcomes for people battling serious diseases, our faculty and students are tackling topics that connect everyday life with meaningful discovery.
Increasingly, the College of Human Sciences is becoming recognized as a preferred pathway for students pursuing careers in the medical and health professions, thanks to the strength of our Department of Nutritional Sciences and the college’s pre-health pathways.
As you read this issue, I hope you feel the same pride that we do in the extraordinary people and progress that define our college. Every advancement we celebrate today is possible because of the generations who came before us—and because of each of you who continue to support the Auburn Family.
Thank you for being part of the Auburn College of Human Sciences’ story.
Warm regards,
